Bamboo Art: A Unique Restaurant Design by Shih Hao Lien

Bringing Nature and Sustainability to the Dining Experience

The design idea of this project was originated from the bamboo skewers used in barbecues. Mimicking bamboo skewers that display the smoked colors and the tossed-away patterns, the grilles consisting of lines in smoked back and light brown colors attaching to each other manifest the contrast sense of quiescence in a crowded space, where therefore exposes the visual sense of misplacement space.

Shih Hao Lien, a renowned designer, has created a truly unique and sustainable restaurant design called Bamboo Art. Inspired by the bamboo skewers used in barbecues, this design brings together art, nature, and sustainability to create a one-of-a-kind dining experience.

What sets Bamboo Art apart from other restaurant designs is its focus on using domestic materials to minimize carbon emissions and ocean pollution caused by air and ocean freight. Instead of relying on specific and imported building materials, Shih Hao Lien opted for locally sourced materials that accentuate the design concepts of nature, environmental protection, and green energy.

The restaurant features grilles made of uncoated galvanized steel, unpainted exhausted pipes, energy-saving lamps, and a stone veneer main wall with a rough texture. These materials not only contribute to the unique aesthetic of the space but also showcase the natural beauty of the materials themselves.

One of the standout features of Bamboo Art is the integration of solar panels on the roof, emphasizing the commitment to green energy and sustainability. By utilizing renewable energy sources, the restaurant reduces its carbon footprint and sets an example for other establishments in the industry.

Shih Hao Lien and his team faced various challenges during the design process. Balancing the client's needs with the concept of space, they opted for natural materials with low color gradients instead of luxurious decorative materials. This decision not only fulfilled their responsibility as designers but also contributed to a better environment for future generations.

The Bamboo Art restaurant spans an impressive 855 square meters and is located in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Completed in May 2020, this design project showcases the fusion of art, architecture, and sustainability in a truly remarkable way.

Recognized for its innovative and practical approach, Bamboo Art has been awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This prestigious award honors designs that meet professional and industrial requirements while integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics.

With Bamboo Art, Shih Hao Lien has not only created a visually stunning restaurant but also a space that promotes sustainability and environmental consciousness. By prioritizing domestic materials and renewable energy sources, this design sets an example for the future of restaurant architecture and design.
